They probably date from Napoleon Bonaparte’s visit to Bruges in 1810. Collection. The collection is the result of two donations. Englishman John Steinmetz (1795-1883) left the museum his collection of over 17,000 prints and drawings when he died. When the City obtained Arentshuis in 1909, these formed the basis for a print gallery. In 1936, English artist Frank Brangwyn also donated a large portion of his oeuvre to the city of his birth.

The first Blacksmith’s Gate (Smedenpoort) dates from 1297-1299; the current gate was built on the remains of the old one in 1367. Throughout the centuries the gate has undergone many changes. The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde is the only preserved beguinage in the Belgian city of Bruges. There are no more Beguines living there, but since 1927 it functions as a convent for Benedictines, founded by canon Hoornaert. In the same year the houses at the west side were also reshaped and enlarged into the Monasterium De Wijngaard, a priory of Benedictine nuns.
The first Kruispoort gate was built simultaneously with the second rampart (1297-1304) and already rebuilt in 1366. Philip van Artevelde destroyed the gate when he captured the city with the Ghent militia in 1382.
