Formerly known as Yaochi ("Jade Lake"), it was named Tianchi in 1783 by Mingliang, the Qing Commander of Urumqi Command. The lake is 1,907 metres (6,257 ft) above sea level, covering 4.9 square kilometres (1.9 sq mi), 105 metres (344 ft) deep at the deepest point.

Bogda Peak: It is the highest peak in the eastern part of the Tianshan Mountain range. Situated in the south of Fukang County it has an altitude of 5,445 meters (17,864 feet). The distances as the crow flies, from the peak to Urumqi and the Fukang county seat, are 60 and 49 kilometers (37 and 31 miles) respectively.
