Peninsula Park is a few steps away south of the pier with grass to relax on or toss a Frisbee on. South of the park is an open area of dunes and a long sandy beach known as Balboa Peninsula Beach. The Newport-Balboa Bike Trail is a paved path that runs in both directions from the pier for runners, bikers, and skaters.
The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is an approximately 1,300 acre coastal estuary. Habitats include open water, mudflats, salt marsh, coastal dunes, seabird nesting islands, riparian, and freshwater marsh. More than 200 avian species have been identified at Bolsa Chica and the reserve is very popular with birders and photographers.
The State Beach has 50 campsites with electric and water hookups for self-contained RVs. Picnic tables, outdoor showers and restrooms are accessible. A beach wheelchair is available for loan, with ramps for sand access. There is a paved beachside trail that runs for 8.5 miles between Bolsa Chica and Huntington State Beaches.

The restoration of Norma Brandel Gibbs Butterfly Park began in 2008, with the removal of 179 dead and dying Eucalyptus trees. Flower beds were added to the North and South walls. The only downside, is the neighborhood of the park was a bit sketchy, and not the best crowd was hovering around, so it made us a bit uneasy. Parking was also tough, and we didn't like that we had to park so far away.
