Berbera was a powerful and well built city that served as a major harbor port for various of powerful Somali Kingdoms in the middle ages like early Adal Kingdom, Ifat Sultanate and Adal Sultanate. It also made Zeila the regional capital due to the latter's strategic location on the Red Sea.
