In 2002, the Webb County Heritage Foundation and the County of Webb acquired the home and undertook its historic rehabilitation. It now serves as the Villa Antigua Border Heritage Museum showcasing the region’s history, culture, industry, and populations through a series of changing exhibits and educational seminars.
The Fort McIntosh Historic District was created in 1975. The district is a triangular-shaped trapezoid containing the lands leased by the city of Laredo to the Federal Government in 1853 for the expansion of the old Spanish presidio that would become Fort McIntosh.
Barkley was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions, one of three Texans to be awarded the Medal of Honor during World War I. Additionally, France awarded him the Croix de Guerre, and Italy the Croce al Merito di Guerra. Private Barkley lay in state at the Alamo, the second person to ever receive this honor.

The Republic of the Río Grande® Museum The Republic of the Río Grande® Museum is housed in one of Laredo’s oldest structures located on San Agustín Plaza in downtown Laredo. The museum is a Mexican vernacular structure, constructed in 1830 with an 1860 addition.
The structure, adjacent to San Agustin Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic educational center. The San Agustin de Laredo Historic District is a historical district that covers what was once the original city of Laredo, Texas that was established by Don Tomás Sánchez.
