The east trailhead is at an elevation of 5,540 ft., rising to 6,430 ft. at Baylor Pass, then down to 4,865 ft. at the west trailhead. The pass is approx. 2.5 miles from the east trailhead. Also, there is a great opportunity for a summit bag from Baylor Pass.
Its county seat is Las Cruces, the second-most populous municipality in New Mexico. The county is named for Doña Ana Robledo, who died there in 1680 while fleeing the Pueblo Revolt. Doña Ana County consists of the Las Cruces, NM Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the El Paso-Las Cruces, TX-NM Combined Statistical Area.
The Doña Ana Mountains are an isolated cluster of peaks located about five miles north of Las Cruces, New Mexico on the Rio Grande flood plain. The land encompassing these mountains has been designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and is administered by the Bureau of Land Management.
