Amathus or Amathous (Ancient Greek: Ἀμαθοῦς) was an ancient city and one of the ancient royal cities of Cyprus until about 300 BC. Some of its impressive remains can be seen today on the southern coast in front of Agios Tychonas, about 24 miles west of Larnaca and 6 miles east of Limassol.

Holy Monastery of St Nicholas of the Cats is located at Cape Akrotiri, near Limassol and is one of the oldest in Cyprus. The retreat was built at the beginning of the 4 th century and is famous for providing refuge to the cats that saved the island from venomous snakes. This is why the monastery was named after St. Nicholas – the cats’ protector.

The scientist-farmer Andreas Christofi, has the largest privately owned water tank in Cyprus, which created for irrigation purposes of stone trees. Andreas Christofi also proceeded in the cultivation of Sturgeon fish in order to produce caviar and also in the cultivation of Trout.
The water was then transferred through water pipes to the Limassol Water Tower from where it was distributed to the town of Limassol (Lemesos). It was a pioneering water distribution system not only for Cyprus but also for the whole geographical region around Cyprus.
