This area was dwelled by the Shao tribe in the past and the island had been called Lalu until 1946, when the government renamed it Guanghua Island. In the severe earthquake in 1999, Sun Moon Lake reservoir was damaged and a historic site of the Shao tribe was discovered. Thus, in 2000, the island was renamed Lalu again.

The Tefuye trail is quite unique. The full name of Tefuye Historical Trail is Tefuye Zihjhong Mountain Climbing Trail, also known as Shueishan Historical Trial. In the earily period of the Japanese Ruled, this trail was the route used by two well-known Japanese anthropologists, Torii Ryuzo and Mori Ushinosuke, to clib the West Peak of Jade Mountain.
Located in the Lugu Township of Nantou, Xitou Village is home to abundant natural resources, making it a research forest of the University of Tokyo during the Japanese Colonial Era. In 1970, the forest was declared a nature reserve and officially named Xitou Nature Education Area.
During the China-Japan War, Japanese took the Monk Xuanzang's remains away from Nanchin to the Tsen Temple of Saidama Ken in Japan. In 1955, the Monk Xuanzang's remains were returned back to the Xuanguang (Syuanguang) Temple. In 1965, the Monk Xuanzang's remains were moved to the Xuanzang Temple after the temple rebuilding.
