The one-room Schoolhouse in Centerville. The first Centerville School was built in 1872 at Nimshew and Helltown Road. Ms. Kate Gillman was the first teacher with a salary of $30.00, plus room and board.
It’s remote location, at 1400’ elevation on Doe Mill Ridge, is home to deer, coyotes, rabbits and bear. Doe Mill Vineyards also grows Malbec and Syrah grapes planted in 2011 on upper Humboldt Road, a location with a beautiful view of Chico and surrounding valley. We will be offering these varietals December 2015.
This marker symbolizes the discovery of the first large gold nugget in California. It was found across this canyon in Willard Gulch, April 12, 1859. Weight 54 pounds. This is not the standard CA Landmark plaque. It is a privately placed plaque.
I dropped by this museum on a whim and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the exhibits. I especially like the collection of tools at the blacksmith shop. Catherine; Dear Golden Nugget Museum helpers. I had a amazing experience at the Gold Nugget Museum.
