The name Randburg was chosen in a competition, and is derived from the South African Rand currency, which was introduced at around the same time that the new municipality was established in 1959. Randburg was a stronghold of the National Party during the apartheid era.
The history of the gardens dates back to the turn of the 20th century, when the elegant gabled house, which the gardens surround, was built for Drummond Chaplin by architect Sir Herbert Baker. These are the the only gardens in Johannesburg from that era that have survived with the setting intact.

Special gardens and services Johannesburg Botanical Garden Herbarium and Library The library and herbarium are at the Johannesburg Botanical Garden Administration Block in Emmarentia. The herbarium houses 5532 indigenous and exotic pressed plant specimens, which help visitors and staff help identify the foliage in the park. Next to the herbarium, the seed room houses seed collections from other Johannesburg City parks.
The vegetation of the Koppies is totally indigenous to the region and is a remarkable example of the richness of highveld grasses, flowers, and trees so close the the city centre. There are three areas that accompany this nature reserve. They are known as Melville Koppies Central, East and West.
Melville Koppies is a Nature Reserve and a Johannesburg City Heritage Site. It is the last conserved remnant of Johannesburg's ridges as they were before the discovery of gold in 1886. Its geology goes back three billion years. Stone tools show that Early Stone Age man camped here as long as 500 000 years ago. There is a Late Stone Age living floor.

Walter Sisulu Square, formally known as the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, is located in the heart of Kliptown in Soweto, South Africa.
