The museum is a beacon of hope and houses a series of 22 individual exhibition areas where visitors can take a walk through history and view the dramatic and emotional journey of racial discrimination and the struggle to overthrow Apartheid.
The name Randburg was chosen in a competition, and is derived from the South African Rand currency, which was introduced at around the same time that the new municipality was established in 1959. Randburg was a stronghold of the National Party during the apartheid era.

The history of the gardens dates back to the turn of the 20th century, when the elegant gabled house, which the gardens surround, was built for Drummond Chaplin by architect Sir Herbert Baker. These are the the only gardens in Johannesburg from that era that have survived with the setting intact.
