What is Kosho-ji Temple Kosho-ji Temple was opened by the Zen Buddhist teacher, Dogen as a Soto school (Zen Buddhist school). Although it was originally located in Kyoto’s Fushimi-ku, Fukakusa district, in response to oppression from Hienzan Enryakuji (Mount Enryakuji) Temple, Dogen departed to Echizen and Kosho-ji went into state of disrepair.

The area from Fushimi Inari to Fushimi Momoyama offers very easy access today, thanks to the Keihan Line, the Kintetsu Line, the JR Line, as well as numerous major roads criss-crossing Fushimi. From Kyoto Station, taking the JR Nara Line to Momoyama Station or the Kintetsu Kyoto Line to Momoyama-Goryomae Station only takes a dozen or so minutes.

Nogi Shrine (乃木神社, Nogi-jinja) was established on November 1, 1923 and dedicated to General Nogi Maresuke (63) and his wife Nogi Shizuko (53) after their death on September 13, 1912. The Tokyo Mayor, Baron Yoshio Sakatani, took the initiative to organise the Chūō Nogi Kai (Central Nogi Association) to build a shrine to the couple within their residence.
