Facts about Lions

Some of the smaller animals that lions eat are birds, hares, turtles, mice, and lizards. They also eat larger animals such as zebras, wild hogs, wild dogs, antelopes, cheetahs, buffaloes, leopards, crocodiles, baby elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, and even tall giraffes!Aug 29, 2017

For example, lions kill somewhere between 25-55% of cheetah cubs! And you can see here Stan's photos of lions just killing…and leaving…a leopard. Lions will also kill hyenas, but enough hyenas can be a pretty solid threat to lions – able to steal carcasses or kill their cubs. Leopards sometimes kill and eat lion cubs.Dec 12, 2012

"Lions are wary of crocodiles and will generally avoid the water to stay away from crocs," writes NatGeo TV. "Occasionally, crocodiles have been known to attack lions while they drink at the water's edge (but lions are also known for attacking and eating baby crocodiles)."Nov 20, 2014

Female lions captures most of the mid-sized prey (wildebeest, zebra, etc.) but the males typically catch the really large prey (buffalo and giraffe). A male can eat 43 kg in a day; a female may eat over 25 kg. But their average intake is about 8–9 kg per day.

Each sound has a different meaning. The most famous of these calls is the roar. It is one of the loudest calls in the animal kingdom and can be heard from up to 8km away. ... Lions roar to tell other lions where they are, to show how big they are and to warn lions from other prides to keep away from their home territory.

Male lions sleep an average 20 hours per day. The females on the other hand do all of the really hard work—killing the majority of prey, which the males then appropriate for themselves. The main danger males face is fighting off other males that want to take over their pride and territory.

Lions. It's not because they are out of shape! It's an adaptation for their protection. Loose belly skin allows animal to be kicked by prey with little chance of injury.

A liger is the result of breeding a male lion to a tigress. A tigon is the result of breeding a male tiger to a lioness. Since lions and tigers do not exist in the same areas, this is not something that happens in the wild. ... Don't support places, like T.I.G.E.R.S. and Jungle Island, that breed ligers.

Lions usually hunt at night. Their prey includes antelopes, buffaloes, zebras, young elephants, rhinos, hippos, wild hogs, crocodiles and giraffes. But they also sometimes eat smaller prey like mice, birds, hares, lizards, and tortoises.

The mane has often been viewed as a shield that protects a male's neck during fights against other males, but lions mostly attack each other on the back and hips. Instead, the size and coloration of the mane serves as a signal to other lions about the male's fitness, similar to the showiness of the peacock's tail.

Females raise their tail to give a 'follow me' signal to their cubs and also use it to communicate with each other when hunting prey. A lion's tail also is a good sign of how it is feeling. By flicking its tail, a lion can warn others to stay away because it is in a bad mood.

"Just over a century ago, there were more than 200,000 wild lions living in Africa. Today, there are only about 20,000; lions are extinct in 26 African countries."Aug 10, 2017

Most lions drink water daily if available, but can go four or five days without it. Lions in arid areas seem to obtain needed moisture from the stomach contents of their prey. When males take over a pride, they usually kill the cubs.

Lions live in prides that consist of one primary male lion, several females and one or two lesser males. The primary male mates with his lionesses. Females might also mate with more than one partner. Several females are likely to be in heat at the same time.

If the female doesn't conceive, she goes back into oestrus two weeks later. During a mating bout lions have sex 20 to 40 times a day for a couple of days. Female lions will sometimes sneak out and have sex with a lion which is not in their pride.
