Facts about Narwhals

Narwhals create a sort-of vacuum and suck up their food which includes squid, Greenland halibut, shrimp, Arctic cod, rockfish, flounder, and crab. Narwhals only have two vestigial teeth. The male narwhal tusk is thought to play no role in feeding because males and tuskless females consume the same diet.

The narwhal's tusk was once passed off for exorbitant sums as unicorn horn. It is a mainly male feature, but occasionally female narwhals have one. There are also a few "double tuskers": males that have two tusks rather than one, for unknown reasons. ... The only tooth they have is the tusk.Oct 26, 2015

Newborn narwhal calves are about 1.6 metres long. Calves are weaned after a year or more; females reach sexual maturity at about six years and males at eight. They feed on fish, squid, and shrimp. Predators of the narwhal include killer whales and, to a lesser extent, polar bears and walruses.

Seals swim around for up to 80 minutes underwater, while Narwhals can only hold their breath for up to 25 minutes. In addition, seals make over 40 dives a day, spending more than 90% of their day underwater and traveling up to 4000 m vertically.Mar 1, 2013
