They are both domestic and wild (feral). There are many people on the Navajo Nation who have horses. Rodeo is really big and some people used wagons into the 1970s in places. And there are many feral horses on the Navajo Nation. They are a problem in much the west. More than 75,000 wild horses live on Western rangelands. read more

Already the feral horses compete with domestic animals, sheep or cattle, and wildlife for water and sparse vegetation. Yet a Navajo Nation oversight committee recently denied an $800,000 funding request from the tribe’s Fish and Wildlife Department to help reduce the horse population, leaving the nation with few alternatives. read more

Sept 28, 2013, approximately 1600 wild and domestic horses and burros have been captured to date in the US funded Navajo government roundups. The tally includes wild horses and both branded and unbranded family pet ponies, trail riding horses, ranch horses and burros. read more
