The flute is concert pitch (it plays the note you finger and blow), whereas the clarinet is usually in Bb (plays Bb when you finger C), a transposing instrument. The clarinet will play down to the E below the staff, whereas the flute will play to middle C, B, or Bb (rarely) below the staff, depending on the foot joint. read more
Clarinets also tinker with Reeds, mouthpieces, and armatures, something that is not seen with flutes. Basically, pick what is comfortable for you, if you have braces that will help, clarinet with braces blows, flute with braces blows much less. read more
Trumpet and trombone can be used in almost anything and for this purpose ARE better than clarinet, however we are not disccussing them, only flute and clarinet. Clarinets can be used in a wider variety of music and is easier to learn. I await my opponent's response. read more
