I have had many dachshunds over the years...general concensus.....they aren't kid friendly dogs. For one, the little ones don't realize how they can hurt them (their backs) and they generally take to one person in the house rather than being "everyone's dog". read more

They can be gentle, friendly, affectionate and cuddly. They’re also smart dogs that are eager to please and love to socialize. They make a good pet for a person with kids, and are quite appropriate for indoor life, including in small apartments. read more

They are devoted to their families and good with older children. They’re also good with other pets when properly socialized. Because of their hunting instincts, you’ll need to supervise your dachshund around small animals that might be seen as prey. read more

Some Dachshunds are great with kids. others, like mine, not so much. My advice would be to get your Dachshund as a pup from an accredited breeder who breeds for temperament as well as physical traits and good health. If you have very young kids do not let them handle the pup without adult supervision. read more
