Are Great Danes great first dogs?

I have lived with multiple Great Danes since 1991 (we currently have five) and seen over 30 litters born and raised. My other half has been a Great Dane breeder since 1980. She also shows, judges (four AKC groups), and has written hundreds of magazine articles and four books about dogs. read more

First time dog owners or only small dog owners I wouldn't recommend to just go out and get a dane on a whimsy. I have had medium to large dogs all of my life and this is my first dane. He is also my first special needs. The importance of the food they eat and how they eat especially while they are growing is different than most dog breeds. read more

In the ratio between length and height, the Great Dane should be square. The male dog should not be less than 30 in (76 cm) at the shoulders, a female 28 in (71 cm). Danes under minimum height are disqualified. From year to year, the tallest living dog is typically a Great Dane. read more
