At my local association we sit every weekend eating and drinking food near our several hives, and I don't recall ever seeing any bees getting interested. Bees are programmed to be attracted to sugary nectar in flowers. read more

Yellow jackets are meat eaters and sugar drinkers and come after our food frequently. Honey bees are more into flowers, plus honey and [for some reason] bananas, so are less of a picnic problem, as everyone else said.
