I don't think they are particularly popular. Most people tend to confuse real "black" licorice with "red" licorice which has a similar shape and texture but contains no extract from licorice root (they are usually strawberry flavored in the US). Black licorice candies are also pretty hard to find, and a lot of stores don't seem to carry them. read more
