Many rocks have layers. Volcanic ash, for example, often sifts down in layers. Granted, it depends in part on what size you define for ‘layers’. In a lot of metamorphic rocks the layers you see are the original deposition layers of a sedimentary rock type. They are, often, preserved during metamorphosis. read more
