In the Marines there's a requirement that hair must be faded from at most 3″ on top to at most 1/8″ on the sides and back of your head. A direct transition from bare skin to long hair (as a mohawk would require) is against regulations. read more

Mohawks are not allowed in any of the military branches. In the Air Force specifically, males’ hair must have a tapered appearance, but there are three exceptions which include the high and tight haircut, the flat-top and shaving the head completely. read more

At one time short mohawks were not considered in that light. I can remember as a child and dependent of a career Marine seeing sometimes young, gun-ho Marines with that hair cut.
