Hydraulic fracturing takes place several thousand feet underground and does not remove any solid material (only gas and perhaps a little oil) so a hole cannot form. In fact this is not really a sinkhole since they are formed by rainwater percolating through limestone or similar water soluble rock. read more

While it is unlikely that fracking caused the sinkhole, Sharon Springs and the surrounding area sit atop of shale basin used for fracking, which makes the case a distinct possiblity. What this means remains uncertain. Fracking has not started in Florida, which remains the most common place for sinkholes. read more
