Are the Fifty Shades of Grey books really that poorly written?

First off, I'm a grown man and not an avid reader, so I'll almost certainly never read them. My girlfriend however is, and has read the series twice. The reviews I hear from her and most other women are basically: "they're mediocre books, and poorly written". read more

I nearly quit after the first page. It was that bad. I did muddle through and it does get a little better but it is never what I would call even average. The internal dialog is horrifically bad. The external dialog is either strange or ok. The descriptions of places are passable. read more
