Are there alligators in Columbia, SC?

The Congaree Swamp National monument is just outside of Columbia-- and there are alligators. I grew up near there, off Bluff Road and hunters would bring live young gators out of the swamp to show them off. The same Congaree river feeds into the Broad River- I think the gators like the swap better than the open river. But I am sure they are there. read more

Populations of alligators in South Carolina have done so well, that the DNR instituted a hunting season in 2008. There are only two species of alligator, the American alligator occurring in the southern United States, and the smaller Chinese alligator from eastern China. read more
