Are there slums in China?

Yes, and no. China do have some places look like a slum, we call them 城中村, literally translate as downtown villages. Like this: This is Dazhalan(大栅栏), which is located at the center of Beijing, just few hundreds meters away from Tiananmen Square. read more

And so the slums came up. But this is foreign. In China, even if there are many poor people, there will not be "slums". In fact, old China had slums. But several major cities, such as Shanghai. But the "shantytown" that still exists in Shanghai after liberation has become an unreal slum. read more

China has slums but China's slums do not resemble shanty towns or temporary housing build on encroached land with no sanitation and electricity. Chinese slums do not resemble Dharavi or Yamuna Pushtha that can be seen in Mumbai and Delhi respectively. read more
