Can an engine seize up from frozen motor oil?

Best Answers

It is my understanding that motor oil is incapable of freezing (see What is the freezing point of motor oil? ). However, motor oil does lose its viscosity as it becomes colder and therefor does not flow as freely. read more

Turned out the seize was from heat expansion (the pistons expanded into the block, and the block into the pistons), so once the engine cooled down, it ran fine, though the head gasket blew at the same time as the seize event, so there was work between the seize and regular use, but before any work was done, the engine still started and ran, after having seized. read more

No oil results in metal to metal contact inside the engine and eventually the heat build up from friction fuses the parts together seizing the engine. An engine can also be seized from sitting for years and not operating. Essentially not lubricating the engine with oil due to lack of use. read more
