Many types of animals will leave intruders alone provided they submit or are on the way out when they could kill them instead. With most predatory animals that is rare, but it DOES happen. I don't think they consider it mercy though, I think they consider it a waste of time when they've already won, and a risk of injury when there is no need. read more
