When a horse enters deep water its body is so large (with most of its barrel filled with lungs and loops of intestine that contain gas and air-filled fiber as well as liquid) it floats! MOST horses swim just fine as answered, but I can tell you from personal experience that not ALL can swim or learn to swim. We had a therapy pool that thankfully wasn't very deep and one mare who just sank like a stone. If we hadn't had lunge lines on both sides to keep her head above water she would have drowned. read more
Agreed, horses can most definitely swim and some really enjoy getting to do it. As long as you or any rider can swim then by all means give it a try. The only precaution is to NOT ride into deep water with a tiedown as part of your tacking up. read more
