Oh yeah, they can. It’s not customary for an oil engineer to stay at an oil rig longer than the statutory term (in Brazil that would be 21 days) but I’ve had some friends that stayed for over 40 days - even up to 90 days! I work on a rig and I currently do a 28/28 rotation which means I work for 28 days (12 hrs per day) and go for field break for another 28 days. It can be tiring and fun at the same time. Starting salary for a MechE in a normal job, from what I gather, is somewhere around $60k, but starting salary for an oil rig engineering job is around $80k. That's only a 30% increase in pay for what seems like a much greater than 30% increase in hardship, which means that there must be some other incentive that I'm missing. read more
