Actually the ideal situation would be to train architects as structural engineers so they could design the structure for their own architectural creations. That , however is not the usual case so the Architect has to have his structural engineer who designs the structure for him. read more
As a structural engineer with over a decade of experience, I agree with Mr. Thornton—to an extent. Yes, structural engineering is the red-headed stepchild of the construction process and, yes, some of the fault is ours. The structural engineer doesn't get the credit that the architect does because as an industry, we have failed to demand it. read more
