Can we fall asleep and dream within a dream?

It is possible to have a dream within a dream, but I don't think there is anything particularly spectacular about it (as Inception sometimes makes it seem). I've had one or two dreams in particular where I woke up and was in a dream, as James Peters described. read more

It is possible but not common to dream right after falling asleep. There are two main stages of sleep; nonREM sleep and REM sleep. After falling asleep, the average person spends their first 90 minutes in the nonREM sleep stage. After the nonREM sleep stage, they transition into REM sleep or "Deep Sleep".
