It is possible but not common to dream right after falling asleep. There are two main stages of sleep; nonREM sleep and REM sleep. After falling asleep, the average person spends their first 90 minutes in the nonREM sleep stage. After the nonREM sleep stage, they transition into REM sleep or "Deep Sleep".
