Believe it or not you actually can. if you have ever flown in a plane before you fly way over the clouds, most clouds are only a couple thousand feet in the air (usually), therefore you can easily fly over tornados. read more

For this reason, flights do generally avoid tornado areas, but not necessarily because of the tornado, but because above the tornado is a massive, churning storm cloud with high winds, hail, and other nasties. read more

It is not flying over the tornado that is the problem, it is flying over the thunderstorm that generated it. Most thunderstorms that generate tornados are too high for commercial aircraft to fly over. read more
