Could a white dwarf have a habitable zone?

A new study finds that we could detect oxygen in the atmosphere of a habitable planet orbiting a white dwarf (as shown in this artist's illustration) much more easily than for an Earth-like planet orbiting a sun-like ... White dwarfs are remnants of normal stars that have burned all the hydrogen in their cores. read more

Lots of noise in the media about planets that could support life and most focus on the habitable zone. As with other answer the issue is much more complex. Technically Mars and Venus are in the habitable zone but unlikely to find many complex civilizations on them. read more

Unfortunately, after 3 billion years the white dwarf would have cooled significantly. We are looking for a planet that is created towards the inner part of the habitable zone in order for it to remain within the zone for 3 billion years. I suspect this shrinks the possible orbits somewhat. read more

For instance, a planet might drift into the habitable zone of a white dwarf from a more distant orbit long after the formation of that dead star. It would still have to contend with tidal heating, but it would have avoided radiation that likely would have sterilized its surface. read more
