If you expand the definition of "US cities" to include existing colonial possessions at the time, I'd say Manila, in the Philippines, was doing pretty well, insofar as it was geographically isolated from the main force of the Depression in continental America, not to mention that it remained a thriving trade hub in colonial Southeast Asia. read more

Although the impact of the Great Depression on Great Britain was less severe than elsewhere, the industrial cities of the Midlands, the North, and Scotland were very hard-hit. Liverpool and Manchester with years of high unemployment had already acquired a reputation as highly depressed areas. read more
