Although Archimedes was Syracusan and would have spoken a Doric dialect, it's possible that his remark was distorted in retelling over a long period of time, and that in the retelling it was reshaped to sound more like standard literary Doric, or, as you suggest, an Attic version was recast in a Doric form. read more
