Yes, in my opinion he sold out for a while in the 1980's. He won a major record contract and was under pressure to sell a lot of records. So he released Lets Dance , which contained some brilliant pop hits . read more

Bowie in fact admitted that he sold out for a while. In an interview I read—I believe it was some time around the early 1990's—he said he regretted some of the work he had done solely for commercial value. I don't recall where I came across this interview, perhaps in Rolling Stone or some other music magazine. read more
