I think the Jamaican accent emerged as the various cultures (Spanish, British, African, Asian) intersected. The merger of the various ethic groups on account of Slavery, Indentured Labour and the environment of the Island itself contributed to a unique Jamaican sound. read more
Keep in mind that when these dialects were formed (1700s) the English and American accent sounded basically the same, so it's innaccurate to say that Jamaican dialect was British-influenced and American Ebonics was influenced by Southern White American speech. read more
