Knights used to dual wield very regularly. They started out with sword and shield, also carrying a lance and a dagger. The shields gradually became smaller and eventually, when it was almost all about personal duels on foot, they fought with sword and dagger. read more
You see dual wielding in movies in video games, like lord of the rings, skyrim, ect. But I haven't heard of a real army that used dual wielding infantry. read more
