It was never stated in any of the original trilogy films that Obi Wan or Yoda wanted Luke to kill Vader, only that Luke must confront him. What Obi Wan or Yoda may have sensed would be the outcome of this encounter was never stated. read more

Yoda and Obi Wan wanted Luke to kill Darth Vader and the Emperor. What makes no sense to me is that they wanted Luke to kill Palpatine. When Yoda was training Luke on Dagobah, we never saw Luke being trained in combat. read more

I say: Yoda did NOT want Luke to kill Vader. The entire point of ROTJ is that Luke (or Leia) was the only thing that could reawaken Anakin's humanity to get him to turn on the Emperor. As the Prophecy said, only Anakin could defeat the Sithari. He just ended up taking 20 years to do it. Therefore Luke killing Vader would accomplish absolutely nothing. read more
