He might have tried. He must've considering that he was such a great mathematician. But he probably didn't have significant contributions, else everyone would know about it. There is no direct evidence that he did try to prove the conjecture. But a method that he and Hardy developed, later on modified by Littlewood, called the circle method forms the crux of almost all important results in additive number theory now. read more
