Jetliners fly from 25000 feet to 39000 feet for commercial operations. Himalayan peaks range up to 28000 feet or so. Typically the mountains do come in the way but there is no problem in flying above them. read more

More problems over the Himalayas could cause cabin decompression than engine flame-out because you can't make an emergency descent low enough and maintain necessary obstacle clearance to the mountains. I'm not sure, but I believe this is the reason why flights are prohibited over the Himalayas. Please feel free to correct me, if I'm wrong. read more

I do not know why you think that planes do not fly over Tibet. I have flown into Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Its elevation is 11,450 feet (3490 meters) above seas level. The plane was flying a lot higher than that as it “landed” at the airport. We were flying a lot higher than that was we went over the mountains. read more
