Alcohol tends to inhibit the growth of micro-organisms at concentrations of 5-15%. This is why the alcohol content of fermented beverages is in this range - too much alcohol and the fermenting bugs can no longer grow. At higher concentrations, alcohols actively kill bacteria. 70% ethanol is optimal for killing most bugs. read more
