Belts are very resent invention to grade martial artist students. West embrased this approach for the purpose to be measured and “seen”. All martial arts (in history) were without belts. They were introduced to make people seem like they are progressing in their art, people can be graded and then buy a new belt when they have learned a certain number of things.
