Do electric cars have gears?

Best Answers

Electric cars don’t have a clutch or transmission gears usually. FIrst of all the engine does not idle at a stop but goes completely off, so no clutch is needed to stop. Further no gear changes are necessary because electrical motors have a wonderful full torque at any RPM habit that doesn’t require matching gear to load and speed. read more

Electric motors also can be designed to have a much larger rpm operating range, which means for small electric cars with low maximum speeds a gearbox is neither needed nor optimal. An electric car like the Tesla does have 2 gears, though. EDIT: I have forgotten about this. read more

Of course, this doesn’t mean that electric cars couldn’t have gears, but they aren’t necessary. First, given MG torque / power / rpm characteristics, they’re perfect for transportation. Torque is necessary for acceleration, the most of which is generated near stall. read more
