They do not sound like gunfire but can be just as loud. Gunfire has a distinct sound of the projectile breaking the sound barrier, almost a crack. Gunshots can be from 140–200db depending on the gun. Let me explain why gunfire sound is higher pitched (IE like a "crack") than the sound of fireworks. Most bullets travel faster than supersonic speed (1088 ft/sec at sea level) and what you hear is a mini sonic boom simultaneously with the explosion of the gunpowder & resultant gas from the barrel of the gun after the bullet leaves. read more
