Do hippos really bite crocodiles in half?

I have seen hippos killing crocs on natgeo or discovery (don't remember). But as far as I know there is a mutual respect between them and these killings are extremely rare. read more

And yes, a hippo can kill a crocodile easily and not exactly tearing them into half (by saying this you are overplaying it's ability). They are able to do this as hippos are considered one of the most aggressive creatures in the animal kingdom and can apply several tons of pressure in a single bite. read more

A full grown can bite a crocodile in half with massive jaws and canines. Now crocodile will prey on a calf, but not the adults. Even on documentaries you see on the Animal Planet, you see crocodiles keeping their distance from the hippos. And the crocodiles won't attack a calf, when its mother is around. read more

The literature (e.g., Pooley & Ross 1989) says that aggressive encounters between Nile crocodiles and hippos have been recorded before: it’s typically stated that hippos have been seen killing crocodiles when defending their calves. Nevertheless, I’m not aware of any previous such cases being captured on film. read more
