Because the technology does not exist yet to dive with them and track them, it is hard to say how deep they CAN go, but they have been recorded at over 2 miles deep, but the average dive is said to be about 4000 feet for them, or around 2/3rds of a mile down. read more
More recently, though, DNA sequencing analysis has indicated the humpback is more closely related to certain rorquals, particularly the fin whale (B. physalus) and possibly to the gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus), than it is to other rorquals such as the minke whales. read more
