Do inductor or capacitor consume any power?

Best Answers

Pure inductor & pure capacitor store energy in form of magnetic field (0.5*L*(I^2)) & electrostatic field (0.5*C*(V^2)) respectively. They never dissipates energy, stores energy during one half cycle and releases energy during another half cycle f... read more

An ideal inductor or capacitor does not consume any real power, as would be recorded by a watt meter or watt-hour meter. But they draw reactive power, meaning current that is out of phase with the voltage. read more

So capacitor does consume power but practically it is negligible. Ideal capacitor do not consume power. In my career, I never saw capacitor getting hot. Capacitor will get hot if it is not properly rated according to circuit requirement. For AC one should use unipolar capacitor. read more
