Iranian expats particularly in US prefer to call themselves Persian and their country Persia to dissmis their connection to Iran and its new regime that was installed after 1979 revolution. Even Persian is actually equal to Iranian, but because Iran includes different ethnics like Azeri, Persian and so on, we prefer to be called Iranians. Iranians do indeed have a great and interesting history, and Persians are not the only type of Iranian, but rather were one Iranian tribe of many that came from a small part of Iran called Pars/Fars. You probably also think Zoroastrianism is Persian too, even though it originated from non-Persian Iranians. read more
