Officers and agents, while in the NYPD Police Academy, make a list of the top three boroughs they would prefer to work in (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island). Their preferences will be taken into account when assigning the officer or the agent to a precinct, though they won't necessarily get their top choice, or any preference on their list. read more

AT LAPD, they're "divisions," at LASD, they're "stations," and in Las Vegas, they're called "areas." The effect is more or less the same. Each has a station where the officers report for work, change into uniform (if they don't wear their uniforms to work), attend a briefing or roll call, and check out a car to start patrol. read more
